Above is the clip that Alex Lerma and I shot and edited for the Texas Home School Coalition. It debuted at their Gala event in Austin last Friday.
So turn up the volume, lean back, and tell us what you think.

Great job! How long did it take you to get this put together?
Thanks David. I think we both put in about 60 hours each (counting scripting, travel, shooting, and editing).
Great stuff Paul!
Any constructive criticism?
love the intro. first talent is noticeably greenscreened ,the background is too out of focus ,that said: very cool background. too many transitions ,it wouldve been more cohesive and immersive if he said it all in one take instead of transitioning. first shots of cars and traffic light were shakey
talent titles look great ,filter on the capitol was over the top ,zoom was too fast
music obscured the audio a bit later on
Thanks for the feedback Colton. I agree that it would have been more effective if all the content had been said in fewer takes and therefore looked less pieced-together.
Dan Stibral, Philip Hagen, Daniel Hagen, and Jeremiah J Warren, yall have any feedback?
I love the THSC opening. The footage of the traffic seemed a little “raw” and could have used some tweaking–perhaps a mild yellow filter.
After a minute I realized the background behind Patrick Barrett was fake, and I wasn’t looking for it. But perhaps that’s just the filmmaker in me.
Also, I noticed Jerri Lynn Ward looking between the interviewer and the camera, and that distracted me from what she was saying. I know there’s not a whole lot that can be done about that post-filming, but perhaps alternative footage could be played during the time span she looks at the camera the most. Also, the “spinning Bible” was a tad too fast. Since not much else in the video is very quick-paced, it doesn’t feel like it fits.
One thing you might consider, if possible, is to use a hand camera in addition to the main camera during interviews; then you can get other shots like hand gestures, and mix them in to emphasize the speaker’s points and create further interest in what he or she is saying. Also, when the speaker is saying something uplifting, warm colors should be used. When the speaker is saying something serious, cooler colors may be appropriate.
Overall, I thought the video was good. Excellent work!
I loved the intro, although the THSC needs to update their logo.
I could tell that one guy was shot on a green screen,’but other than that the overall visual elements were good.
Hey Paul! That was really excellent!
I thoroughly enjoyed it and was quite impressed with the quality of it. I wouldn’t have noticed the green screen thing, except that these two gentlemen ^^^ mentioned it
I do sympathize with the difficulty with too many transitions. I have that problem in my Controversial Warriors series. In the very first episode, I used alot of transitions which made the speaker jump. I thought it worked for that scenario, but that was partly due to the music and the fact that it was a scripted/acted performannce. Later on in the series I started leaving in the pauses… consequentially the videos got a little longer, but it feels smoother. It’s a pros and cons issue I guess. I really liked how you overcame this problem later on in the video by zooming in and out on the speaker everytime you cut. This really fixed the problem, except that after a while I felt that this happen a little to frequently too. It’s difficult to balance, especially when you can only work with what you got. However, I think you did a great job with it. The only people who are ever going to notice most of the issues mentioned are going to be people like us, filmmakers. Thanks for sharing your work with me Paul!
Thanks for all of the great feedback everyone. With people like yall behind us we’ve got great hope for the future.
